The Book Club originated with a group of a dozen mid-career artists, predominantly local, all with ongoing art careers in the Bay Area, Los Angeles, London and Paris. Many of these artists studied under such luminaries as Peter Voulkos, Elmer Bischoff, Wayne Thiebaud, Harold Paris, Robert Bechtle, Stephen Destaebler, etc. during the mid-60s and early 70s. The Book Club affords its members the opportunity to share stories of those formative years and discuss current art events and exhibits by Book Club members and other artists. The Book Club also has a band (Magic Box) and performance painting by Norton Wisdom. It has been meeting every Thursday evening for almost 20 years as a time-honored commitment and a way for artists to communicate with one another.
